our HISTORY

NPFC was founded by Joost Besjin in 2019 to gather the community around supporting a semi-pro men’s team to compete in the Cascadia Premier League. The season kicked off in 2021 with the men finishing 3rd place. In 2022, the club became a non profit organization continuing under the leadership of Juan Carlos Cisneros, again supporting a men’s semi-pro season in 2022 and 2023. In 2024, Jess Haugen and Juan Carlos joined forces to create a women’s recreational level team to support the needs of the community. Blaze has enjoyed 3 consecutive spring seasons consisting of friendly games with women’s teams in the area. NPFC has collaborated with local clubs to offer various opportunities for year-round play to women of all levels on the North Olympic Peninsula. NPFC continues to build on playing opportunities for local adults and remains open to supporting a men’s side again in the future.

joost besjin NPFC Founder

A lifelong soccer player, Joost founded Northern Peninsula FC because he saw strong local talent on the men’s side with no organized outlet beyond college and pickup games. He wanted to give these players a platform to showcase their abilities and pursue professional opportunities. Originally from the Netherlands, Joost lived in the United States from 2012 through 2025. During that time, he coached his daughter’s team in North Carolina for six seasons, worked as a referee in Washington and North Carolina, and officiated higher-level college matches broadcast on ESPN+.

Juan Carlos cisneros and Jess Haugen Women’s Side Developers

Juan Carlos brought a wealth of coaching experience to NPFC, with a history spanning almost 20 seasons at various clubs, including the Peninsula College men’s team, Bainbridge Island FC, Stormking FC, and Sequim HS. He holds the Advanced National Diploma with United Soccer Coaches and the Level 4 certification with the European Football Coach Evolution.

Jess, after many years playing high-level ultimate frisbee, started playing soccer at age 44, and completely fell in love with the game. A lifelong athlete, she was driven to learn and improve. She wanted a coach, a women’s team, and a place to play, but that didn’t exist. The community was rich with talented women who also wanted a place to play.

Jess and JC got to work and created NPFC Blaze, the first 11v11 women’s recreational soccer team on the Northern Peninsula. JC, who was interested in gaining experience coaching a women’s team, was head coach for Blaze in our inaugural season in 2024.
