Our COACH
Tom Harris
I believe success in soccer is firmly built on the confidence of the individuals to possess the ball and the desire of the team to maintain possession once we have it.

Soccer has been a constant in my since I first entered school. I grew up in the soccer community in Hanover, NH that even in the early 1970s had won State Soccer Championships. That has continued to this day and included two Championships while I was in high school. I played Div. I college soccer at Brown University in Providence, RI and have remained active as a player and coach over the last 40 years. I earned a National Soccer Coaches Association “National” coaching license. I coached at both Sequim HS and Port Angeles High School. I’ve coached within and served on the boards of Sequim Junior Soccer, Storm King and The Peninsula Soccer Academy, as well as being a representative to Washington Youth Soccer. I was a founding coach of the Port Angeles Adult Recreational Soccer League.
I am a strong advocate for girls and women in sport with the overarching philosophy of instilling confidence. In soccer, confidence is gained through the skills needed to control the ball when it comes to you, through learning to make decisions with the ball and how to fit into a team structure. I believe success in soccer is firmly built on the confidence of the individuals to possess the ball and the desire of the team to maintain possession once we have it. This objective is best achieved through quick decision making and short precise passes. The current World Cup Champions Spain exemplify this sort of soccer.
My coaching style is based on the knowledge that we learn through doing and we practice the way we want to play. Training sessions are designed to create as many game-like situations as possible. I don’t believe in “line drills” where we work on static skills. Rather, skills, tactics and team play are built into the soccer activities that are constantly being built up from a few players in non-pressure situations to more realistic games with teams and goals. All of which is directed towards teaching the game, building skills and increasing confidence on the field.
One of my on-going goals for the soccer community on the North Olympic Peninsula over the past 25 years has been to develop women soccer coaches. A few of the girls I coached have become coaches. Coaching is a powerful way to influence a community and I hope that some of the NPFC players, through participation in this soccer club, can build the confidence to take this next step.
